Craig Levie was a solid playmaking defenceman who put up respectable numbers in NHL after dominating in junior and the minors. Following his NHL tenure he was a successful player in Europe where the larger surface and more wide-open style of play suited his game.
Born in Calgary, Alberta, Levie played in the AJHL with the Pincher Creek Panthers before toiling in the WHL for three different clubs. He was chosen 43rd overall by the Montreal Canadiens at the 1979 Entry Draft and became a solid worker on the AHL's Nova Scotia Voyageurs. In 1980-81, he led the league with 62 assists and was placed on the league's first all-star team and presented the Eddie Shore Award as the outstanding defenceman in the AHL. A few months later, he was claimed on waivers by the Winnipeg Jets at the start of the next season.
Levie played 40 games as a rookie in 1981-82 then split the next season between the AHL and the minors. He joined the Minnesota North Stars in a trade prior to the 1983-84 season and helped the club reach the semi-finals. The steady backliner was picked up on waivers by the St. Louis Blues in October 1985 and went on to score a career-high 29 points for the club. The next year, he was reacquired by Minnesota to add depth then signed with HC Davos of Switzerland in 1986.
Levie returned to the NHL for nine games late in the 1986-87 schedule then returned to Davos the next year. He played three years for the Milano Devils in Italy where his puck-handling talents led to 149 career points. Levie retired after playing a game for the IHL's Fort Wayne Komets in 1991-92.
