Defenceman Mario Marois was a fine playmaker with a hard shot from the point that also thrived by playing it rough in his own end. He suited up for over 950 games with five different clubs during a solid career.
The native of Quebec City starred for the local Remparts of the QMJHL for two years where he accumulated 137 points and 509 penalty minutes in two seasons. Following the 1976-77 season, he was named to the QMJHL second all-star team and was taken 62nd overall by the New York Rangers at the Amateur Draft. The youngster spent most of his first pro year developing with the AHL's New Haven Nighthawks.
During his first full season in the NHL, the scrappy defender scored 31 points and showed poise while helping New York reach the Stanley Cup finals. He duplicated this point total the next year but his defensive play fell off. The Rangers opted to trade Marois to the Vancouver Canucks early in 1980-81 since they had a glut of bodies on defence. In March of that season, the rugged blueliner was sent to the Quebec Nordiques where he settled in for nearly five seasons.
Marois' offensive talent suited the Nords' fast-paced game and his tough work on defense pleased coach Michel Bergeron. His crisp passes and willingness to fend off opposing forwards made him a valuable asset to the club when it reached the semi-finals in 1982 and 1985. Early in the 1985-86 season, Marois was sent to the Winnipeg Jets for veteran defenceman Robert Picard. He continued to play tough and jump in on offense but the Jets were stuck in a rut of playing fairly well in the regular season then running into the Edmonton Oilers in the playoffs.
In December 1988, Marois was re-acquired by the Nordiques but the club was much weaker than the one he left behind. After the club missed the playoffs, the veteran blueliner helped Canada win the silver medal at the World Championships. He played one more year in Quebec and helped the St. Louis Blues amass 105 points to finish second in the NHL's overall standings in 1990-91. Marois split his last NHL season between the Blues and the Jets then spent the 1992-93 season with the AHL's Hamilton Canucks before retiring.
