Dave Pichette is a representative of only a small band of hockey players to make the jump from their native Newfoundland to the NHL. Former Red Wing Alex Faulkner first led the way followed by a smattering of players, including Pichette who skated for the Quebec Ramparts of the QMJHL from 1978 to 1980.
At the junior level, Pichette performed as a steady blueliner, but lacked the flashy style and numbers of his contemporaries. As such, he was passed over in the Entry Draft but did manage to sign as a free agent with the Nordiques in 1980.
In Quebec, he lasted parts of four campaigns, making frequent tours in the AHL as he struggled to find the consistency he needed to remain a full-time NHLer. He did, however, play one complete season plus 16 playoff games with a very strong Nordiques squad that, like all the other fish in the pond, just couldn't contain the New York Islanders.
Pichette put in a brief stint with the St. Louis Blues in 1984 before joining the New Jersey Devils where he enjoyed his most productive season, garnering 17 goals and 40 assists. But the following year, distractions entered his life such the birth of twins and a big-time collision with the Blackhawks' Wayne Presley that left Pichette on the ice in an unconscious state for over two minutes. He did recover, however, but never really regained his form.
By the end of the season he was skating for the Maine Mariners of the AHL, a league he called home, with the exception of six games with the Rangers, until his retirement in 1990.
