A natural goal scorer with speed and quick hands, right-winger Tony Tanti topped the 40-goal mark three times during a career that lasted nearly 700 games. In addition to being a top sniper in North America, he was also an impact player for six years in the German Bundesliga.
The Toronto native starred in Junior B with the St. Michael's Buzzers and in the OHA with the Oshawa Generals. In 1980-81, he set a rookie league record with 81 goals and was selected 12th overall by the Chicago Black Hawks at the Entry Draft. Tanti was placed on the league's first all-star team in 1981 and the second team after scoring 126 points in 1981-82.
The slick forward only played three games in Chicago. In January 1983, he was traded to the Vancouver Canucks for power forward Curt Fraser. He scored 16 points in 39 games over the rest of the 1982-83 season and worked through a series of growing pains and adjustments. The next year, he exploded for 45 goals, including 19 on the power play. He followed his breakthrough season with two consecutive 39-goal performances before hitting the 40-goal mark in 1987 and 1988. Tanti was also chosen to play for Canada at three consecutive World Championships beginning in 1985.
By the late '80s, the goals stopped going in as frequently as in the past and the Canucks began to reconfigure their roster. Halfway through the 1989-90 season, Tanti was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins where he was a power play specialist for parts of two seasons. He played a little over a season with the Buffalo Sabres before signing with Preussen Berlin of Germany. Tanti played six years in the Bundesliga before retiring in 1998.
